As the Dallas Newborn Photographer I have been into this trade for many years and earlier I used to photograph 6 weeks old newborn. However, these days it appears that newborns seem to be photographed almost the minute they come from the Hospital! That’s right; Dallas Newborn Photography has nowadays stood apart as a staggering concept in treasuring all those priceless moments.
So, when are the good time and what age is just the ‘right’ age for a newborn to be photographed. Just a simple Google search will yield you an array of answer and while some say 6 weeks, others say 3 months. And if you ask an experienced Dallas Twin Photographer when the best time is, in most of the time you will hear that a newborn should be photographed within the first 2 weeks of life. To be honest, when we consult clients we often say the best time is between “7-14 days”and then we add a HOWEVER and gradually go further deep into everything. Yes, you have guessed that right; as a newborn photographer, we let clients know that there are two significant factors to determine the “right” time and they are however, AGE and WEIGHT!
Yes, an ideal time to photograph a newborn is between 7-14 days however; if you have a 5 pound baby then it’s better to wait until the baby has a little more weight. As a matter of fact, even the best newborn photographer will suggest that the baby get to around 6 or 6.5 pounds. It is pertinent to mention here that for some babies, this might mean a shoot at 10 to 12 days.
Also, it is not very uncommon to photograph twins at 4 weeks if they are premature. But what if twins are 8 or 9 pounds at birth? Your most sought after Dallas Twin Photographer will even say “how fast can you get here”!
Depending upon the age and weight of the newborn I have even photographed little bundle of joys as early as 3 days and as late as 6 weeks. Photography for newborn is challenging for all babies, the utmost care needs to be obtained. Studio should clean, hands should be sanitized and all blankets and props should be cleaned in a dye free wash.
